Sing What?

When the words were finally translated into English, Pete Seeger and his folk band The Weavers recorded a new version of the song, which became known as the “New Version.” Instead of the original chorus – “Uyimbube,” which translates as “You are a lion” in Zulu – the chorus had been incorrectly translated as “a-wimoweh,” which means “You are a lion.” Many bands have recorded this song throughout the years, notably The Tokens’ 1961 doo-wop classic, which was a big smash in the 1960s.

Other excellent interpretations include those by Brian Eno and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to name a couple.

The Lion Stirs, and Stirs Up Controversy

‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ was a song that appeared in the 1994 film ‘The Lion King. Following its popularity, a lawsuit was filed, alleging that Linda’s heirs were entitled royalties totaling $1.6 million for the use of the song. The action was eventually dismissed. After reaching a settlement with the licensing business in 2006, the heirs agreed that the proceeds from the song would be deposited in a trust for the benefit of all parties. They have been performing as a “a capella” group since 1978 and are from Canada.

Most of the members of the ensemble are most recognized for their cover versions of popular tunes. They’ve recorded covers of songs by everyone from the Beach Boys to the Beatles to the Zulus and everything in between.

Voices of the Time

When The Nylons released their debut cover album, “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” it was one of the first songs to get any attention, albeit on alternative or college radio stations. At the time, their “a cappella” format was considered somewhat unconventional. (Image courtesy of Shutterstock) In spite of this, their own interpretations seemed to blend in perfectly with the upbeat punk and forward-thinking new wave of the time. Hearing their wonderful voices was always a nice and refreshing contrast from the usual background noise.
