Music-based activities called Jazz Chants require pupils to recite words and short sentences in a rhythmic manner. Carolyn Graham was the first to popularize them, back in the 1980s.

Concept

Jazz Chant is a rhythmic expression of natural language that connects the rhythms of spoken American English with the rhythms of classic American jazz. It is a rhythmic representation of natural language. Jazz Chants are specified poetry with repeated rhythms that are performed in jazz bands. The reader’s interpretation of the rhythm may influence the beat. Essentially, a jazz chant is a segment of actual language that is delivered with specific emphasis on the inherent rhythm of the language.

Ideally, the chant’s rhythms, emphasis, and intonation pattern should be an identical duplicate of what the pupil would hear from an educated native speaker in a genuine conversation setting.

During this stage, the teacher focuses on the main tense and the simple present tense in the classroom.

To put it another way, pupils are given an exercise including several chant models with specific prominent tones.

Students’ voices are captured one by one in order to ensure the accuracy of the data.

During her twenty-five years of teaching English as a second language at the American Language Institute at New York University, Carolyn Graham developed the practice of jazz chanting.

Graham’s approach was the subject of a variety of books, audio recordings, and CDs, most of which were released by the Oxford University Press.

Jazz Chants are appealing to students of all ages, and they work well with large groups of students.

Jazz chants help students enhance their oral communication skills in terms of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and understanding by encouraging them to speak more fluently.

Jazz chants make pupils seem more natural while they are speaking English in front of an audience. Students in ESL and EFL classes throughout the world may now hear jazz chants in their classes.

Jazz chants: Introduction

A series of short jazz chants is presented by Miles Craven. They are a fun method to practice stress and rhythm in the classroom, and they will help your kids sound more natural when they speak English. How to Incorporate Jazz Chants into Your Classroom You may put these jazz chants to use in a number of entertaining situations. You may have your pupils practice stress and rhythm with you in order to make them seem more natural while they are speaking English. You may also use them to learn crucial vocabulary and grammatical structures because each jazz chant focuses on a different aspect of the language or the grammar!

  1. Stress and rhythm should be practiced.
  2. For the sake of entertainment, play the recording for the first time.
  3. Students should be divided into pairs and instructed to draw a tiny circle over each word that is emphasised.
  4. At the end, play the recording one more time and encourage pupils to sing along with it.
  5. Make two copies of the Recording script for every two pupils in your class, and distribute them to them.
  6. Students should listen to the tape and make a list of all the terms they hear that are linked with the vocabulary topic.
  7. Instruct them to underline all of the important terms.

Review grammar Look over the grammatical focus for each jazz chant and select one that you wish to go over again.

Write the grammatical emphasis on the board and divide the class into pairs to create a few sample sentences based on the grammar focus they learned.

Make copies of the Recording script for each student and play the recording again so that they can listen and read at the same time as they listen and read.

At the end, play the recording one more time and encourage pupils to sing along with it.

Use your hands to clap along with the beat to help kids detect the tension and rhythm of the song.

Encourage others to follow your example. Remember, this is intended to be an enjoyable experience! Maintain a rapid and vibrant pace in the class, and make every effort to ensure that kids participate in the singing.

How to Create a Jazz Chant by Carolyn Graham

Carolyn Graham presented a workshop on how to create a Jazz Chant at the JALT National Conference in Shizuoka, Japan, in November. I videotaped her workshop and, with her permission, am sharing the portion of it in which she shows her approach with you. I like Carolyn for a variety of reasons, one of which is that she spends the vast majority of her time disclosing her secrets. Carolyn demonstrates in this short video how simple it is for instructors to develop their own chants to emphasize vocabulary or grammar.

It is impossible to imagine all of the possibilities, which I believe is one of the reasons Carolyn’s methodology has withstood all of the methodological twists and turns that have occurred in our field over the past 30 years.

Tips for constructing your own Jazz Chant (taken from the video) include the following: 1) Select a topic that will pique the attention of your pupils.

(“What’s your name?” is a genuine question.) “Can you tell me your name?” is not a true language because no one truly speaks in this manner.) Select three vocabulary words–a two-syllable word, a three-syllable word, and a one-syllable word–and combine them with a little repetition to form the following chant: Baseball, basketball, and golf are all popular sports.

She is one of my role models. In the interest of amusement, I looked up Carolyn on YouTube, where I came across this video of children in Osaka performing the Hello Song from the film Let’s Go 1. Because they were so adorable, I decided to attach a video of them with this post.

J is for Jazz chants

When combined with music, jazz chants provide an innovative technique to relate the rhythm of natural spoken language to the beat of music. Carolyn Graham, the acknowledged queen of the genre, was the first to invent jazz chants more than three decades ago. While working as a singer/pianist in bars during the day, Carolyn’stumbled upon’ the brilliant idea of connecting the natural rhythms of spoken American English with the rhythms of traditional American jazz music in order to help her students develop their speaking skills at night, as she has stated.

  • My own chants, which reflect the natural rhythms of the form of English I speak (that is, British rather than American English), were inspired by Carolyn, and I’ve been creating them and using them with my students on a regular basis ever since.
  • When it comes to jazz chants, they are frequently in the form of an exchange or conversation that reflects the natural give and take of ordinary spoken language.
  • After a few minutes of strolling along the street, the first speaker encounters two friends: one in verse 1 and another in verse 2, with four rhythmic beats or “steps” separating each verse.

As an illustration, the following is a cumulative chant that may be used to practice farm animal terminology with young children before they listen to a narrative on the same topic.

There’s a sheep on the farm along the river, which is nice.

There are sheep, a duck, and a cow on the farm near the river, among other animals.

There are sheep and ducks and a cow and a hen and a horse on the farm near the river, as well as other animals.

In addition, there is a cat.

The following is an example of a grammatical chant to practice the 3rd person present simple with somewhat older children that is based on known narrative characters: Davina like lettuce, but she doesn’t care for peas at all.

She does, in fact.

No, she doesn’t have any.

Potatoes are Freddie’s favorite food, but he dislikes rice.

He does, in fact.

No, he doesn’t have any.

We must first set the framework for the use of jazz chants in the classroom and introduce any new language before beginning the chants.

Do a preliminary listening exercise in which children demonstrate knowledge of the grammar chant above (for the grammar chant above) and then go on to the main listening activity.

Flashcards can also be used to assist children remember the animals they have named collectively in the vocabulary chant above.

In the following weeks, students can practice chanting the chant in pairs or groups in preparation for “performing” it in front of the entire class on Friday.

To keep the rhythm and pace of jazz chants when teaching children, I like to bring my collection of percussion instruments (see photo above) to class, which the students take turns asking for (e.g., “Can I have the tambourine, please?”).

This provides an added layer of intrigue as well as the sensation of putting on a spontaneous musical performance as a group.

Then count the children in to four as a cue to begin speaking the chant. If you don’t want to use percussion, you may just recite the chant. The following are the primary advantages of utilizing jazz chants with children:

  • They are motivating, memorable, and enjoyable
  • They provide variety in language practice
  • They allow for lots of natural and enjoyable repetition
  • They allow for physical movement
  • They are non-threatening
  • They reinforce vocabulary and grammar
  • They improve all aspects of pronunciation
  • They develop fluidity and natural speed in speaking ‘chunks’ of language
  • They provide opportunities for’rehearsal,’ which aids children in later transferring the language to other contexts
  • They provide opportunities They contribute to the development of children’s self-confidence as well as their sense of accomplishment and success.
